Ramon Tungka
Environmental Advocate & Nat Geo Indonesia Editor
Kicking off 2025, we met with Indonesian environmentalist Ramon Tungka, to uncover his journey and the work he is so passionate about in his community focused on protecting the environment and different ecosystems.
“I’ve always been deeply passionate about the outdoors. From climbing towering peaks to cycling, scuba diving, and sea kayaking, I’m constantly seeking new challenges and adventures. My curiosity has always driven me to explore the world around me, pushing boundaries and conquering both physical and mental limits. This curiosity led me to host several documentary programs, including ‘100 Days Around Indonesia’ in 2013.“
Environmental advocate and documentarist Ramon reflects on the urgent need to address climate change and environmental degradation.
Drawing inspiration from Indonesia’s rich ecosystems, particularly its vast mangroves, he emphasizes their crucial role in climate resilience and global conservation efforts. Ramon believes that while we must adapt to the changing environment, we also have a responsibility to actively seek solutions.
Luminox: What inspired you to join the Navy, and how did you feel called to serve your country in this way?
Gonzo: I have always possessed a desire to be a part of something larger than myself. Plus, I wanted to travel and see the world. I did not want to just read about places, I wanted to see them in person. Joining the Navy allowed me to accomplish both.
Luminox: Can you share one of your most memorable moments from your time in service that shaped your approach to life afterward?
Gonzo: I was blessed to experience so many things all over the world over to span of my 34 years in the Navy, so narrowing it down might be hard to do. However, obtaining my college degree in the presence of my wife, daughter, and parents ranks up there as one of the most memorable. My college career followed my military career, starting in 1985 while I was stationed in Florida, then in Virginia, and finally completing it at Norwich University in 2016. I was raised to finish what you started and to never quit and wanted to lead by example for my daughter as she was graduating high school and heading off to college. I could not expect her to do those things if I wasn't prepared to do so myself.
He encourages each of us to reflect on how we can make a difference, even through small, everyday actions. By doing so, he believes that together, we can overcome environmental challenges and make a lasting difference for future generations. Creating positive change and ensure a sustainable future for the planet.
“Every day, we should ask ourselves: What positive changes can we make for the planet? Our individual actions, no matter how small, can collectively lead to monumental shifts in the way we live and interact with the world around us.
One day, we will look back and proudly say, We made a difference. “
Ramon has been recognized as an Everyday Hero through his constant pursuit and passion to protect the landscapes we get to call our playgrounds.
